INTERMEDIATE 6-WEEK CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY COURSE
Cost £180
Classes are restricted to 4 students
Proof of double-vaccination required
Now you’ve learned the basics, it’s time to broaden your photography experience.
This course is designed to allow you to explore different photography ‘Specialisms’ that you would not easily be able to experience on your own, all in a controlled environment under the guidance of an experienced photographer and instructor.
There are also two ‘Digital Darkroom’ lessons, introducing you to Photoshop, Adobe Camera Raw and explaining their place in relation to each other.
This intermediate course is designed for you to learn the workflow to take your photography from pre-production, through a full shoot, to post-production and output for print or web.
The Specialisms are:
- Using off-camera flash, studio lighting and portraiture;
- Using off-camera flash, studio lighting and portraiture;
- Night-time photography
- Macro photography
Each Specialism is broken into 3 parts:
An introduction and explanation of the Specialism;
The controlled ‘live shoot’;
Using the Digital Darkroom.
In detail
1: An introduction to the Specialism
You will be introduced to the camera techniques and shooting practices required for the specific Specialism. This will involve PowerPoint examples, discussion and hands-on practice in the classroom (or in the field with night-time shooting) prior to the live shoot to ensure you understand the concepts involved in the Specialism and know how to use your camera in the best way to capture the shoot.
2: Live shoot
A ‘live shoot’ will be set up for you to utilise those skills in a real-world environment. You will experience photographing ‘clients’ in a studio environment, head out for external, night-time shooting capturing light trails and ‘light painting’ along with exploring a fascinating variety of macro photography.
These live shoots take place in and around Brighton.
3: Digital Darkroom sessions
The first hour of these Digital Darkroom sessions will see us work on a photo together, to introduce you to the editing concepts involved in post-production. The second hour you will work on your own photos from the previous session(s) under my supervision.
MACRO KIT
You will be required to have some kit available for the macro session towards the end of the course. You may find that you already have a macro facility on one of your lenses.
If not, you will need to purchase a set of extension tubes for your camera. These typically retail at around £20-25. You can get further clarification in the earlier lessons.

You must have experience of using the above creatively to control how your image looks.
You must be familiar with your camera’s menus and settings.

Course Dates:
Classes are 7.00-9-00pm every Tuesday for 6 weeks commencing Tuesday 13th September
Bill will take you through the fundamental elements of composition, camera control, and even some handy hints on photoshop and raw editing.
A word of caution though, if Bill can't improve your picture taking then no one can!
.... and I would thoroughly recommend his courses.
I have a much better understanding of how my DSLR works now and learnt a great deal on the beginners course, in all aspects.
Calm surroundings, small group, lots of visual displays and online weekly course notes. Bill was very open to questions and helped us with setting up our own cameras.
Bill explained some of the mystery of photography.
I finally understand and appreciate what impact the depth of field and focus point have on my landscape images. I already knew a lot of the theory but can now relate this to which of my images I prefer, and why - so thank you for that!
The sessions outside helped to consolidate things learnt in the classroom.
Bill was also most helpful when I emailed with queries.
Bill’s classes are clear and all questions are answered allowing students to make quick progress, creating a nice step-by-step understanding of the camera and how to compose great photography.
The lessons were clearly presented with all questions answered.
Bill's lessons and well-structured at a pace for all ages and abilities with the invaluable field days to practice what you learn in the classroom.
Bill is a great, patient teacher with a wealth of photography knowledge.
I enjoyed the way in which we were taught, making the technical aspects of photography accessible (and not being bogged down by too many superfluous technical terms), while also not giving any impression of being looked down upon, like the atmosphere in some photography clubs I've been to.
Bill’s overall knowledge, experience and training skills in all aspects of photography are second to none.
He has an unrivalled passion for photography with this enthusiasm conveyed and embodied into all his training sessions.
Bill Black is a confident, talented and accomplished photography master.
His facilitation style will compliment any learner from complete beginner to professional photographer.
Being able to adapt his laid back style and blend his extensive knowledge into a well rounded enjoyable session is what I most admire about Bill.
